It has been a busy Summer and I didn’t go to see as many films as I had hoped for. When it came to Twisters, I knew I wanted to go and watch it but by the time I came back from holidays it had already been out a while.
Thankfully it was doing rather well at the box office and they were still showing it a couple of times a day at my local Showcase cinema.
In the nineties, I had really enjoyed the original Twister movie which starred Helen Hunt and followed storm chasers as they got a bit too close to some dangerous tornadoes.
Daisy Made This One Great!
A few years ago, Daisy Edgar-Jones played a teenage daughter in the British TV series ‘Cold Feet’ and now she is a well known Hollywood star. Since acting in ‘Normal People’ and taking the lead in ‘Where The Crawdads Sing’ she has gone from strength to strength.
In the 2024 version of Twisters, her character – Kate - is a budding scientist who wants to find a way to calm tornadoes down by dropping certain chemicals inside the storms as they whip up a frenzy. The story begins with a tragic accident that happened a few years before the film’s events. Kate lost some of her friends to a storm, but the other survivor later comes to find her to put her experiment into action.
This movie has incredible special effects, as you might expect, but it also has a real heart. Going back to visit her Mum (played by Maura Tierney from ER), Kate faces difficult reminders of a past love, a happy past life and a school project that still remained untested.
She also comes across another team of storm chasers which includes a very cocky Tyler (Glen Powell) who seems to run a shabby team. He launches fireworks into the middle of each tornado and flirts wildly with Kate. It is hard for her to ignore his charms but she is not convinced that he is anything more than a self-absorbed show off.
In A Nutshell
Kate holds together a movie which is well paced, cleverly written and easy to watch. The two hours and two minutes whirled by and I came out feeling entertained.
With Twister chase scenes, heartfelt moments between Kate and her Mum, and a very entertaining narrative, this film is well worth checking out.
